Ordering seeds!

It has been snowing and snowing for the past few days. This along with the frigid temps makes any chores outside the opposite of fun. I had three school snow days and lots of time on my hands. I started putting together a plan for my 2015 summer garden. Isn't that a good thing to do on a snowy, cold day?!

I usually buy my vegetable seeds from a local seeds store or even Home Depot (I like Burpee brand seeds for the most part). This year I decided to try something different. I found Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I loved going through all the different and unusual vegetable and flower seeds they sell. My shopping cart started filling up quickly before I realized that I have a limited amount of space!

Here is a list of what I will be ordering:

Vegetables

Oregon Sugar Pod II Snow Peas - I have grown these before and love them, but I have not grown this specific variety.

Desiree Dwarf Blauwschokkers Garden Pea - This is a new one for me and I am very excited to try it! I love both the flowers and of course the purple snow peas.

Tomatillo Verde - I have not grown tomatillos before so this is a new one as well. I am really looking forward to making salsa verde with this!

Dragon Tongue Bush Bean - Isn't this a beautiful bean?! I read about these in a magazine and wanted to try them.

De 18 Jours Radish - I thought I would try this variety of radish when I saw that they should be ready to harvest after only 18 days.

I went a little crazy with the lettuce varieties, but I plan on growing them in containers around the garden. We eat a lot of salads in the summer and I look forward to trying some of these different varieties.

Flowers/Herbs

Florist Pepperbox Poppy - I adore poppies and saw these in my uncle's garden last year. I know my honeybees will adore these as well which is why I am buying them. I would also like to harvest some of the
seeds for muffins and breads.

Borage - A huge hit with honeybees so I plan on putting these all around the garden. They are also supposed to deter pests.

Brocade Mix Marigolds - This variety had good reviews from customers and I was planning on growing marigolds for the garden anyway.

I still have more seeds to purchase (tomatoes, eggplants, basil, green peppers), but I will do that with my students. We grow vegetable every year in the school greenhouse and have a plant sale in May. One of our favorite projects of the year!  I will post more about this when we get started in a month or two.

Why write a farming blog?

So, why did I start this blog? I have been attempting to start this blog for some time now, but I just did not have the incentive to do so. I spend a big chunk of my free time reading other farming blogs which have become my inspiration (I am hoping to share some of my favorites in the future).

Some of my reasons for starting this blog include:

A need to connect with other who have similar interests
and homesteading goals

Wanting to share my homesteading experiences with others
-- both the successes and mistakes!

Create a place to document what we do on the farm.
I'm sure there are other reasons, but these are what I could think of right now.  Becoming as self-sufficient as possible has become a big part of my family's life. We still have a long ways to go, but at least we have started. I look forward to sharing this part of my life with you and hope it is something that can bring you enjoyment!

This is me. Not the most attractive photo, but working with the bees in
my beesuit is a very hot job especially in the middle of summer!
